The Irish Democrat is a classic Irish Pub with a vintage vibe. Famous for cheese wontons, chicken fingers, and Calla’s Irish Stew, the menu boasts great salads, burgers, apps, and entrees. We are happy to serve you in a relaxed environment for family and friends.
The Irish Democrat has been a CR favorite since it was founded on May 1, 1984. The original size of the building only included the front bar area and had a maximum capacity of three tables. Section C (the back entrance of the front bar) was expanded and opened on Halloween night, 1986.
The front bar area was originally a drug store which was then converted into the bar. That bar was called The Web and was open for business 24 years prior to the Democrat buy-out. The tile ceiling in the front bar is all that remains of the original architecture.
The infamous Moose was purchased in Columbus Junction and was added shortly after the Democrat opened for business. The tradition of decorating the Moose for all occasions remains an important part of our image.
The back of the house and dining room were added in winter 1990. At that time the TV’s, stereo system, and pool room were added for entertainment. It was also when Irish Democrat implemented it’s first full scale menu.
The decor of the Democrat has developed over the years. Artifacts and antiques mixed with neon lights and beer memorabilia is an ongoing collection. There have been pieces donated by friends of the Democrat to add to our ‘home away from home’ collections.
The success of the business is built on the concept that “this is where your friends are” and our patrons, especially our ‘regulars’ are the cornerstone of our business model.
